3D-printed corals spark underwater hope at Koh Racha Yai
In a cutting-edge bid to revive the coral reefs around Koh Racha Yai, south of Phuket, the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) is making waves with its annual reef restoration campaign. The initiative unveiled its latest eco-marvel: 3D-printed coral larvae islands on Saturday, November 30, designed to breathe life back into the battered seabeds.
The high-profile launch event brought together DMCR Director-General Pinsak Suraswadi, sustainability advocates from Siam Cement Group (SCG), Thai Union Group PCL, the Earth Agenda Foundation, and volunteer divers. Pinsak highlighted the dire need for the project.
“Without restoration efforts, coral degradation threatens marine biodiversity and the sustainability of diving tourism, which is vital to the region’s economy.”
Among the campaign’s goals is to combat the devastating effects of natural disasters, coral bleaching, and human interference, including careless anchoring and trampling. The Rak Talay project tackles these challenges head-on with 3D printing technology that mimics natural coral structures, creating ideal habitats for coral larvae to grow.
Thai Union Group CEO Thiraphong Chansiri and SCG’s Assistant General Manager of Sustainability Management, Chana Phumi, praised the innovation for its sustainable and eco-friendly approach.
“This collaboration not only restores coral reefs but strengthens biodiversity, balances the marine ecosystem, and fosters partnerships between public and private sectors,” added Adam Brennan, Thai Union’s Group Director of Sustainable Development.
This initiative marks a step up from earlier efforts in 2020 when SCG introduced the technology to Koh Racha Yai using environmentally friendly mortar that blends seamlessly with marine life. By accelerating coral recovery and enriching the underwater landscape, these efforts aim to ensure a brighter future for Thailand’s vibrant marine tourism industry, reported Phuket News.
With support growing stronger each year, the DMCR’s 3D-printed coral campaign is turning the tide for ocean conservation.
