A dramatic video capturing tourists struggling to board boats amid powerful waves on Koh Larn, Pattaya, has gone viral, showing the island’s rough seas during the monsoon season. The footage, taken on Thursday, January 16, highlights the dangerous conditions as local staff braved the waves to assist tourists and ensure their safety.

The island faced particularly strong winds and waves in the afternoon, with beaches like Ta Yai, Ta Waen, Thong Lang, Tien, and Sang Wan being most affected. However, calmer conditions prevailed at Nual and Samae beaches, which remained safe for visitors. Locals reported that the situation was much calmer on the morning of January 15, with normal tourism activities proceeding without incident or warning.

Despite the challenging conditions, officials have not issued red flags but are urging tourists to stay vigilant.

“Check official announcements and follow safety advice closely.”

Officials emphasised the importance of caution while boarding boats or using piers in rough conditions.

Weather forecasts predicted wave heights around Koh Larn could reach 2 to 3 metres in some areas, posing risks to maritime activities. Officials have strongly advised against risky pursuits such as scuba diving, jet skiing, and boating in affected zones.

Local officials reassured visitors that safety is their top priority and encouraged business owners to monitor conditions closely and adhere to guidance from officials. Tourists are also reminded to plan their visits around weather forecasts and avoid high-risk activities until conditions improve, reported Pattaya Mail.

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued its 8th weather warning for heavy rain, identifying key provinces that will be most affected. Temperatures will drop by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius (°C) across many regions.

Tourists are constantly reminded of the importance of safety whilst enjoying their time in Thailand as severe weather conditions pose significant danger. In November last year, a towering wave measuring 5 to 6 metres swept a Russian woman off the rocks at a Koh Samui viewpoint and into the sea, where she vanished. Efforts to rescue her proved futile due to the intense sea conditions.
