Pattaya man dies after fall during scrap metal theft at condo

Police yesterday were alerted to the discovery of a body at an abandoned eight-story condominium in Pattaya after a plan to steal scrap metal and electrical wires from the condo went south.

Police and rescuers yesterday, March 30, found the body of 50 year old Somjai on the second floor, his head severely injured. It appeared that he had been dead for approximately six hours.

Next to the body, investigators found a bamboo ladder and a wooden ladder connecting the second and third floors.

A 43 year old man named Panya, Somjai’s friend, was found covered in blood and in shock. He was the one who initially reported the discovery of the body.

Panya later confessed that he and Somjai had entered the abandoned building with the intent to steal scrap metal and electrical wires.

They arrived at around noon, with Panya remaining on the first floor while Somjai climbed the makeshift ladders to the second floor to begin his theft.

Moments later, Panya heard a loud thud and, upon climbing to the second floor, found his friend lying unconscious. Despite attempts to revive him, it was clear that Somjai had already passed.

Preliminary investigations suggest that Somjai may have been attempting to climb to the third floor when he lost his balance, falling and hitting his head on the concrete floor below, leading to his fatal injuries.

The body has been sent to the Police Hospital in Bangkok for an autopsy. Police plan to question Panya further and will pursue legal action against him for theft, trespassing, and drug-related offenses.

The condo’s owner will also be contacted as part of the ongoing investigation, and further legal actions are expected, reported Pattaya Mail.

In other news, police in Pattaya responded to a domestic disturbance call and found a 47 year old Canadian man unconscious with bruises. The incident occurred in the early morning of March 30.
