8 injured after pick-up truck loses control and flips in Pattaya

Just over a week after 13 students were killed when they were thrown from the back of a truck that lost control in Samut Prakan, 8 people have been injured in Pattaya in similar circumstances.

The Pattaya News reports that the accident happened on Motorway Sai 7 Road, as workers were being transported to a construction site.

The truck driver, Sombat Saelee, says that while trying to avoid colliding with another car, he lost control and the truck flipped. Emergency workers were on the scene shortly after and transported the injured to Bang Lamung Hospital.

While technically illegal for passengers to ride in the back of a pick-up truck, the law is very rarely enforced. Following last week’s tragedy in Samut Prakan however, the government is warning of the risks of riding in the back of trucks.

Campaigners are now calling for stricter enforcement of the law, but the reality of doing so poses a challenge, with many rural families having no other means of transportation.
