Thai woman’s depression cure bid ends in father’s sexual assault
Dad gives depressed daughter traumatic ordeal instead of solace
A 20 year old Thai woman, hoping to cure her depression, moved to live with her biological father in the central province of Samut Prakan but ended up being sexually assaulted by him.
The victim filed a complaint against her 42 year old father, Somkuan, at Mueang Samut Prakan Police Station on Monday, May 26 and provided a voice recording of a conversation between her and her father as evidence. The sexual abuse was clearly demonstrated in the evidence, leading officers to immediately issue an arrest warrant.
Somkuan was arrested yesterday, May 27, while he was operating his food stall outside the Samut Prakan City Pillar Shrine. The man denied all allegations, claiming he had simply expressed love to his daughter as usual.
The victim revealed to police that she had been suffering from depression after breaking up with her boyfriend. She wanted to live in a new environment and sought a way to alleviate her symptoms, so she moved from her mother’s home in the Isaan province of Surin to live with her father in Samut Prakan.
The woman stated that she simply got out of a frying pan into the fire. Her father approached and touched her inappropriately throughout her stay in a rented room with him. She tried to remind him that she was his biological daughter, but it did not help.
The victim said initially, she did not want to take legal action against her father but could no longer avoid doing so after he directly demanded sex from her.
The victim recounted that her father told her to lie still during the sexual act, and he would give her 4,000 baht. She refused, but the man continued to approach her. She managed to record parts of their conversation that day and fortunately escaped from him.
The woman said she felt sorry if her father had to go to jail and did not think the matter would reach the police. However, she did not want her father to continue his actions and feared for her safety.
Despite his denial, the clear evidence led to Somkuan being charged under Section 276 of the Criminal Law: committing an indecent act against a victim aged over 15 years old. The penalty is imprisonment of up to 10 years, a fine of up to 200,000 baht, or both.
As the crime was committed against the suspect’s descendant, he would face a penalty one-third more severe than that stated in Section 278, according to Section 278 of the law.
