Thai man confesses to killing son-in-law for raping his granddaughter

Tragic family secret revealed after the body's discovery in Nakhon Sawan pond

An 80 year old Thai man in Nakhon Sawan province confessed to killing his son-in-law, stating that the victim had raped his stepdaughter, who is also his beloved granddaughter.

A Thai woman discovered the dead body of her husband, 44 year old Sergeant Major First Class Nirut, in a pond in the Phaisali district of Nakhon Sawan on September 22.

The woman told officers from Takhro Police Station that her husband had gone to the pond to fish and had not returned home, so she went to search for him and found his body.

According to the woman, Nirut had gone with her father, but she had picked her father up on the evening of September 21. Her father told her that Nirut insisted on continuing to fish alone.

Officers initially suspected that Nirut might have a conflict with a local fisherman in the area, leading to a fatal assault. Despite this initial assumption, police continued to question Nirut’s wife and her family members.

They discovered that Nirut and his wife did not have children together, but the woman had a daughter with her ex-husband. The family normally lived in Lop Buri but came to Nakhon Sawan to visit the woman’s family.

Further questioning led police to suspect Nirut’s father-in-law, 80 year old Sarawut. Pressure from officers led Sarawut to confess to murdering his son-in-law.

According to the police, Sarawut was furious after learning that Nirut had raped his 14 year old granddaughter, Nirut’s stepdaughter. Sarawut detailed to the police that he faced death threats from Nirut after the pair had a confrontation.

Sarawut revealed that he beat Nirut with a wooden stick until he collapsed to the ground. Nirut attempted to crawl, and Sarawut said he let him do so until he was exhausted. The murderer then repeatedly beat his son-in-law and strangled him before abandoning the body in the pond.

During the reenactment, Sarawut refused to speak with the media. He only said that he had nothing to say and did not want to talk about it.

The man was charged under Section 288 of the Criminal Law: intentional murder. The punishment is the death penalty, life imprisonment, or imprisonment from 15 to 20 years.

Sarawut’s granddaughter confirmed to Channel 3 that she was indeed sexually assaulted. She stated that both she and her grandfather had faced a death threat from Nirut. She expressed pity for her grandfather’s arrest.
