Chachoengsao man killed by wild elephant near cassava field
A 55 year old man from Chachoengsao province was fatally attacked by a wild elephant while walking home. The elephant, believed to have strayed from its habitat in search of food, attacked the man in a cassava field.
Yesterday, January 20, Saptawee Kulsaree, head of the Tambon Administrative Organisation in Tha Kradan, received a report from residents about a fatal elephant attack near Wat Khao Hin Dang in Tha Kradan subdistrict, Sanam Chai Khet district, Chachoengsao province. The victim was later identified as Charin, a 55 year old resident of Khao Hin Son subdistrict, Phanom Sarakham district.
His body showed signs of severe trauma, with broken legs and facial injuries, and it was determined that he had been deceased for over five hours. Elephant footprints were discovered around the scene.
Kamron, a 38 year old nephew of the deceased, recounted tearfully that his uncle had visited his home for dinner the previous day at 5pm, which was not far from the incident location. After the meal, Charin headed home as usual to help with charcoal-making.
The next day, around 2pm, residents informed Kamron of the tragic incident involving the wild elephant.
Reports indicate that recently, elephants from Khao Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary have been leaving their designated area near Baan Na Yao, Tha Kradan subdistrict, to forage for sugarcane in Kabin Buri district, Prachinburi province. This is possibly due to local farmers in Chachoengsao province switching from sugarcane to eucalyptus cultivation, reported KhaoSod.
The elephant responsible for this fatal attack is thought to be a solitary, aggressive animal that separated from a larger herd. It was last seen near Ban Krabok Tia forest, not far from the attack site.
In related news, an incident at the annual Nakhon Phanom Red Cross Fair, when an elephant, startled by fireworks, ran through the crowd, injuring five people. The governor ordered legal action against the elephant’s owner, who had just arrived in the area.
