High tide floods Samut Prakan, ONWR warns Bangkok

Thailand’s coastal defences were put to the test this morning as high tides sent floodwaters pouring into parts of Samut Prakan, submerging roads and triggering an urgent warning for Bangkok and four other provinces to brace for more.

Flooding struck early along Soi Krathing Daeng in Phra Samut Chedi and in front of a local police station in Ban Khlong Suan subdistrict, as rising tides pushed water levels beyond normal thresholds.

The sudden surge, driven by unusually high tidal patterns, left roads waterlogged and prompted concern among residents and local officials alike.

The Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) confirmed the flooding was the result of high tide-induced overflow and issued an urgent alert to nearby regions.

According to the ONWR, residents living outside flood embankments along key rivers should take immediate precautions.High tide floods Samut Prakan, ONWR warns Bangkok | News by Thaiger

“The high tide is likely to cause the Chao Phraya, Tha Chin, and Mae Klong rivers to overflow in low-lying areas,” the ONWR stated, advising those in at-risk zones to monitor updates closely and prepare for water intrusion, particularly in vulnerable communities.

The warning includes five provinces: Samut Prakan, Bangkok, Samut Sakhon, Nakhon Pathom, and Samut Songkhram. These regions are located along Thailand’s most significant rivers, where high tides can intensify existing flood risks, especially during seasonal transitions and periods of heavy upstream discharge.

Flood-prone areas outside protective embankments remain the most vulnerable, particularly in communities along the Chao Phraya River. The ONWR is working with local disaster response teams and water management authorities to closely monitor tide cycles, water levels, and infrastructure readiness.

Officials urged residents in the warning zones to stay informed through official updates, avoid unnecessary travel in flooded areas, and elevate belongings in anticipation of potential inundation. Emergency services have been placed on standby, and temporary shelters are being prepped in case evacuations become necessary, reported The Nation.

With tides expected to remain high over the coming days, communities in central Thailand are being told to stay alert. As weather patterns continue to fluctuate, the ONWR stresses the importance of proactive flood readiness as the country heads into the wet season.
