Loei province was thrown into chaos as the season’s first heavy rainfall triggered a catastrophic wave of accidents, leaving over 50 vehicles wrecked in just one hour. The sudden downpour turned the roads into slippery hazards, catching drivers off guard and resulting in a series of crashes across multiple districts.

Yesterday, February 17, intense rainfall lashed several areas, including Phu Luang, Dan Sai, Na Haeo, Mueang Loei, and Wang Saphung. While wet conditions naturally increase accident risks, this annual phenomenon played a major role in the alarming number of collisions.

Every year, Loei experiences a dangerous phenomenon when its first rain of the season washes away layers of rubber residue from truck spills, which have accumulated on road surfaces over time. These black stains, invisible when dry, turn extremely slippery when mixed with rainwater, creating hazardous driving conditions.

Local police and rescue centres were overwhelmed with emergency calls as vehicles lost control, skidding off roads and colliding into barriers. Reports indicated that at least 50 accidents occurred within just one hour, affecting various highways and city roads.

Rescue teams worked tirelessly to assist stranded motorists, clear damaged vehicles, and prevent further incidents. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported but several people sustained injuries ranging from minor bruises to more serious conditions requiring medical attention.

Following the chaotic scene, local officials issued urgent warnings to drivers, urging them to exercise extreme caution during the early seasonal rains. Motorists were advised to reduce speed, increase braking distance, and remain alert when travelling on Loei’s roads.

Local government officials are also looking into long-term preventive measures to address the issue. Proposals include regular road cleaning to remove residue, enhanced warning systems, and public awareness campaigns to educate drivers about this recurring danger, reported KhaoSod.

With Loei’s first rain often leading to dozens of accidents each year, officials stress that preparedness and awareness are key to avoiding future disaster.
