Heartbroken woman rescued from bridge in northeast Thailand
A Thai woman, distressed after a breakup, was found crying by the Chi River Bridge in Yasothon province, prompting a good Samaritan to call the police. Officers managed to calm her down after an hour, ensuring her safety and returning her home.
A young woman, overcome with sadness from a recent breakup, was found sitting alone on the edge of the Saensuk Bridge, which spans the Chi River. Alarmed by her state, a concerned citizen immediately contacted the Phaya Thaen Radio Centre, fearing for her safety. The incident took place near the border between Mueang Yasothon Municipality and Ban Tha Wari, Kud Nam Sai subdistrict, Phanom Phrai district.
Upon arrival, the police discovered the woman, identified as 28 year old Wannawipaporn, with tear-streaked cheeks and a red face, fixated on her mobile phone. She was visibly upset and intermittently sobbing.
It was revealed that she had been dumped by her boyfriend, who works at a café in Phanom Phrai district. Heartbroken, Wannawipaporn fled to the bridge, hoping her boyfriend would follow and console her. However, her calls went unanswered, and his phone was switched off, heightening her distress.
Eyewitnesses reported that the woman seemed intent on jumping off the bridge at times, standing up and holding the railing as if prepared to leap. One of the reporters on the scene intervened, grabbing the railing and holding her for over 20 minutes until police arrived.
Nearby residents, who were fishing, mentioned hearing a heated argument between the woman and her boyfriend about an hour before the incident.
Successful rescue
Police Lieutenant Wariyut Khotchum from Mueang Yasothon Police Station arrived shortly after, working with his team to de-escalate the situation. The officers spent nearly an hour speaking with Wannawipaporn, trying to calm her down and ensure her safety. Eventually, the Thai woman agreed to accompany them to the police station.
Wannawipaporn, who resides at house number 52, Moo 3, Kud Lad subdistrict, Mueang district, Ubon Ratchathani province, was unable to provide much information about the incident, only shaking her head and crying.
The police then decided to contact the mother of her boyfriend, named Ratch, who agreed to take her in. Wannawipaporn has been staying at Ratch’s house, located at 475 Rat Khet Khum Rueang Road, Mueang Yasothon Municipality, for the past six months.
Ratch, when asked about the argument, stated that she was unaware of the exact reasons behind their quarrel. The police ensured that Wannawipaporn was safe and left her in the care of her boyfriend’s mother, reported KhaoSod.
