Family ties or twisted alibis? Daughter walks past dead mum without a clue
A 72 year old woman was found dead in her home under mysterious circumstances, with her daughter claiming she was unaware of her mother’s death despite walking past the body several times. The incident left the deceased’s younger sister in shock upon discovering the body.
Police Lieutenant Piyawat Namma from Rattanathibet Police Station revealed that at 6.30pm yesterday, August 19, they received a report of a suspected suicide in a house located in the Suweira Phra Nang Klao community, Bang Krasor, Nonthaburi.
Local officials, including Police Colonel Pisut Chantarasuwan, Deputy Police Superintendent Pasakorn Chaitaveewong, investigation officers, Poh Teck Tung Foundation members, and forensic doctors, promptly arrived at the scene.
They discovered the body of 72 year old, Sommai, lying on her side near the stairs on the ground floor of a two-storey wooden house. She was dressed in a patterned shirt and shorts, with a white plastic chair overturned near her feet and a rope tied around her neck.
Initial investigations revealed no signs of a struggle. Inside the house was the deceased’s daughter, 47 year old Fa Sai, who claimed she was unaware of her mother’s death. The police were sceptical of Fa Sai’s account and brought her in for further questioning, as it seemed implausible she could have repeatedly walked past her deceased mother without noticing.
Fa Sai stated during the initial interrogation that she had been staying in her room on the second floor and had gone out to buy food at a local market. She claimed she did not see her mother lying dead near the stairs until a neighbour informed her.
Drug use
Fa Sai also admitted to buying three methamphetamine pills for 100 baht on August 18 and consuming them at home. She confessed to using drugs for over five years, typically on her days off. Fa Sai mentioned she used to work as a security guard at a mall in Ratchaphruek but resigned on July 31. She added her mother often complained about financial struggles.
Neighbours reported that Sommai usually walked in and out of her house regularly or watched television with the door open. They grew concerned when they didn’t see her all day and decided to check on her. When her younger sister arrived and opened the door, she screamed upon discovering Sommai’s lifeless body.
A preliminary autopsy revealed that Sommai had been dead for seven to eight hours but it could not determine whether her death was a suicide or a homicide. The police are awaiting detailed autopsy results and forensic evidence to conclude the cause of death.
Given Fa Sai’s confession of drug use, the police conducted a test for illegal substances in her body before proceeding with charges related to drug use, reported Khaosod.
