The Cobra Gold joint military exercise is set to take place in Thailand from February 25 to March 7, featuring the participation of 3,200 US personnel.

The opening ceremony is scheduled at 9am on February 25 at Suranaree Camp in Mueang district, Nakhon Ratchasima.

The event stands as the largest joint and combined exercise in the Indo-Pacific, symbolising the robust alliance and strategic partnership between Thailand and the United States, alongside a collaborative relationship with other allies and partners, as conveyed by the United States embassy.

Participating nations have previously collaborated on rescue operations, disaster recovery, and responses to various real-world challenges in the region. This year’s exercise will encompass three main components: a command-and-control exercise, humanitarian civic assistance projects, and a field training exercise designed to enhance interoperability and strengthen regional ties.

Approximately 30 nations are expected to participate directly or as observers, with 3,200 US personnel involved.

The statement highlighted, “Cobra Gold is a longstanding symbol of the US-Thai defence alliance. The exercise demonstrates our steadfast commitment towards enhancing the critical capabilities and readiness required to address the full spectrum of security challenges in the Indo-Pacific together.”

The 44th iteration of Cobra Gold will be co-hosted by the Royal Thai Armed Forces. The exercise aims to bolster the abilities of participating nations to plan and execute combined and joint operations, foster relationships, and improve interoperability across various domains, addressing large-scale natural disasters and cybersecurity threats, reported Bangkok Post.

In January, Pattaya is set to host 5,400 US Navy personnel from January 27 to 31 as they take a break from military training exercises, prompting Chon Buri police to roll out comprehensive safety and traffic measures.

The troops will arrive on four US Navy ships, docking in areas managed by Sattahip and Laem Chabang police stations. Police Lieutenant General Yingyos Thepchamnong, Commissioner of Region 2 Police, met with Luu Pham, Assistant Attaché of the US Embassy in Thailand, to finalise security and traffic plans for the popular beach town.
