Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP) leader General Prawit Wongsuwan is set to lead party members of Parliament in a no-confidence debate against Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on March 24, according to PPRP Secretary-General Paiboon Nititawan.

Paiboon stated that the PPRP will have a two-hour slot to scrutinise the prime minister, with General Prawit actively participating in the proceedings.

The debate will address several issues, including the government’s management of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s previous detention in a premium ward at the Police General Hospital and the controversy surrounding the 2001 Memorandum of Understanding regarding maritime claims in the Gulf of Thailand.

Additional topics such as the Alpine land dispute and the government’s casino-entertainment complex project will also be discussed.

Paiboon expressed confidence that the censure debate will challenge the prime minister. The no-confidence motion, filed last week, accuses the Thai premier of lacking leadership and being influenced by her father, Thaksin.

The 38 year old PM has assured her readiness to engage in the debate, stating she will present factual evidence to counter the opposition’s claims. She noted that the debate will offer the public a chance to understand her role as “the country’s first Generation-Y prime minister.”

Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, affirmed that his party, as part of the coalition government, will support the prime minister during the debate.

Anutin remarked that the prime minister has conducted her duties lawfully and is committed to resolving national issues.

He added that if the debate involves the Bhumjaithai Party or the Interior Ministry’s agencies, ministers from the party will provide explanations or assist the prime minister in responding to the opposition, reported Bangkok Post.

In similar news, Thaksin dismissed claims of political victimisation by General Prawit, instead blaming him for the current turmoil. Thaksin questioned the necessity of the 2014 coup, which saw Prawit play a key role in the military-led government under Prayut Chan-o-cha’s National Council for Peace and Order.
