The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued its final warning regarding a summer storm affecting upper Thailand, forecasting thunderstorms, strong winds, and potential lightning. The warning, issued at 5pm yesterday, March 8, highlights the impact on 33 provinces, including Tak, Kamphaeng Phet, and Phichit.

The northern, central, and upper southern regions are expected to experience summer storms, characterised by thunderstorms and strong gusts. The potential for lightning strikes remains due to moderate high-pressure systems or cold air masses covering northeastern Thailand and the South China Sea. This results in eastern and southeastern winds carrying moisture over upper Thailand.

Residents nationwide are advised to exercise caution against the imminent summer storm. It is recommended to avoid outdoor activities during thunderstorms, especially in open areas, under large trees, or near unstable structures and billboards.

Farmers are encouraged to reinforce their crops and prepare to mitigate potential damage to agricultural produce and livestock. Also, you should be aware of the weather conditions during this period.

Provinces expected to be affected yesterday, March 8, include Tak, Kamphaeng Phet, and Phichit in the north; Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Kanchanaburi, and Ratchaburi in the central region; and Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, and Chumphon in the south. The TMD advises the public to stay updated through their website or contact their 24-hour hotline.

The 24-hour weather forecast indicates a weakening of the high-pressure area, leading to reduced rainfall in upper Thailand and rising temperatures with daytime haze. Meanwhile, the eastern and southeastern winds over the Gulf of Thailand, the south, and the Andaman Sea will intensify, increasing rainfall in the south.

Weather forecast

Moderate sea conditions are expected in the lower Gulf of Thailand, with waves reaching 1 to 2 metres. At the same time, the upper Gulf and Andaman Sea will see waves of about 1 metre, reaching over 2 metres in stormy areas. Mariners are urged to navigate cautiously and avoid areas with thunderstorms.

Dust and smoke accumulation in the upper northern region are moderate to high due to weak to moderate wind coverage. In contrast, the lower north, northeast, central, and eastern regions show good air quality due to effective ventilation.

From 6pm today to 6pm tomorrow, the northern region will experience hot temperatures with daytime haze and isolated thunderstorms, mainly in Tak, Kamphaeng Phet, Phichit, and Phetchabun, with temperatures ranging from 17 to 38 degrees Celsius.

The northeastern region expects 40% of its area to have rain, particularly in Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Chaiyaphum, Khon Kaen, Kalasin, Mukdahan, Maha Sarakham, Nakhon Ratchasima, and Buriram, with temperatures between 17 and 31 degrees Celsius.

The central region anticipates 40% of its area to experience thunderstorms and strong gusts, mainly in Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Chai Nat, Suphan Buri, and Kanchanaburi, with temperatures between 22 and 34 degrees Celsius.

The eastern region expects 40% of its area to see thunderstorms, especially in Nakhon Nayok, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat, with temperatures from 22 to 33 degrees Celsius and waves over 2 metres in stormy areas.

The eastern coast of the southern region anticipates 40% of its area to see thunderstorms and strong gusts, particularly in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Yala, and Narathiwat, with temperatures between 24 and 34 degrees Celsius.

The western coast will see hot daytime temperatures, with 30% of the area experiencing thunderstorms, mainly in Ranong, Krabi, Trang, and Satun, with temperatures ranging from 24 to 36 degrees Celsius.

Bangkok and its vicinity expect 30% of the area to have thunderstorms, with temperatures between 24 and 34 degrees Celsius, reported KhaoSod.
