Heavy rainfall warning issued for 32 Thai provinces

Communities on high alert as saturated ground raises landslide fears

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued its sixth warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across 32 provinces in Thailand, urging caution against potential flash floods and forest runoff. Today, July 13, the TMD forecasts heavy rain in parts of the north, northeast, central, east, and south regions of the country.

Residents, especially in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Phayao, Nan, Nong Khai, and Bueng Kan, are advised to be vigilant due to the risk of heavy and accumulated rain, which may result in flash floods and forest runoff, particularly in hilly terrains, near waterways, and low-lying areas.

The adverse weather conditions are attributed to a monsoon trough affecting the upper north and upper northeastern regions, Laos, and northern Vietnam. Additionally, a low-pressure cell is covering the upper north, coupled with a strong southwest monsoon prevailing over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand.

The upper Andaman Sea is experiencing strong winds, with wave heights reaching 2 to 3 metres and over 3 metres in stormy areas. The lower Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand are seeing wave heights around 2 metres, rising above 2 metres in stormy conditions.

Marine operators in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand are advised to exercise caution and avoid sailing in stormy areas. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea should remain ashore during this period.

The weather forecast from 6am today to 6am tomorrow indicates thunderstorms in 70% of the northern region, with heavy rain expected in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Phayao, Nan, Tak, Phitsanulok, and Phetchabun.
