Uttaradit man charged for setting stepfather on fire after dispute

A serious incident occurred in Lap Lae district, Uttaradit province, where a 43 year old man named Kittisak allegedly attempted to kill his stepfather by pouring petrol and setting him on fire. The police found evidence of drug use in Kittisak’s system, leading to charges of attempted murder.
At approximately 7.20pm, yesterday, April 9, Police Lieutenant Prasit Sudasud, deputy inspector at Mueang Luang Police Station, received a report of a violent assault at a house in village number three, Mae Phun subdistrict. Upon arrival, the police found that the locals had already detained the suspect while rescue volunteers were transporting the severely injured victim to Lap Lae Hospital.
The crime scene, a single-storey concrete house, showed evidence of petrol spills and burn marks on the floor, along with a petrol container that was collected for evidence.
Initial investigations revealed that Kittisak, the alleged perpetrator and stepson of the victim, had a history of frequent arguments with his 72 year old stepfather, Bunma. On the day of the incident, both men were at home, where Kittisak had been drinking alcohol.
An argument ensued when Bunma asked Kittisak to find his phone, which Kittisak could not locate. In a fit of anger, Kittisak reportedly opened a petrol canister, which was intended for use in the garden, poured petrol on his stepfather, and set him alight.
Bunma’s frantic movements to extinguish the flames inadvertently caused Kittisak to sustain minor burns himself.
Neighbours, alerted by Bunma’s cries for help, rushed to the scene and managed to extinguish the flames engulfing the victim. Following this, rescue volunteers quickly transported Bunma to Lap Lae Hospital and informed the police, who subsequently detained Kittisak.
In a preliminary test, police found that Kittisak’s urine tested positive for drugs. He was taken into custody and charged with attempted murder, reported KhaoSod.
Kittisak confessed to his actions, explaining that he was frustrated by his stepfather’s request to find the phone, and the loud television further exacerbated his anger. He expressed regret over his actions but acknowledged that it was too late to change what had happened.
