Samut Prakan facility to burn about 28,000 kilograms of drugs today

A large quantity of illicit drugs, which have been stored in an Food and Drug Administration warehouse for evidentiary purposes, are being burned today. The thousands of kilograms of drugs, including methamphetamine, heroin and ecstasy, are said to have a street value of more than 29 million baht.

A court order gave the go-ahead to destroy the drugs in Samut Prakan, just southeast of Bangkok. Natural gas as an accelerant and 6 US Environmental Protection Agency protocols will be followed to make sure there is no pollution from the burning which will reach 1,200 degrees Celsius, or 2,192 degrees Fahrenheit.

Officials from the Narcotics Control Board checked nearly 28,000 kilograms of drugs that were being stored at an FDA warehouse. Thai media adds that the drugs were checked to ensure transparency.

The total number of drugs that are set to be burned comes in at nearly 28,000 kilograms and is valued at about 30,000 million baht. The drugs include 15, 890 kilograms of methamphetamine and caffeine pills known as “ya ba,” 10,817 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, 697 kilograms of heroin, and 16 kilograms of ecstasy.
