Police in Prachuap Khiri Khan province arrested a karaoke bar owner for allegedly trafficking minors for sexual exploitation. A 15 year old victim was discovered among the individuals being forced to provide sexual services during the school holiday period.

The operation, led by the Crime Suppression Division’s deputy commander, was initiated following a tip-off from an international anti-trafficking organisation. The karaoke establishment, located in Pranburi district, was reportedly employing minors under the age of 18 to engage in sex work.

An undercover investigation confirmed the illegal activities, leading to the raid and arrest of the 46 year old owner, Anong (surname withheld), on charges of human trafficking involving minors aged over 15 years for sexual exploitation.

During the operation, law enforcement officers posed as customers and were offered sexual services from two girls, one aged 15, for a price of 2,500 baht (US$68), while services from girls aged 16 and above were priced at 2,000 baht (US$54). Upon delivery of the girls, the officers revealed their identities and apprehended Anong.

The victims were separated for psychological rehabilitation, having become unwittingly involved in the sex trade under the pretence of earning money during the school break, reported KhaoSod.

Upon questioning, Anong confessed to running the establishment and luring girls to earn extra income. When clients expressed interest, she would charge them 2,000 to 2,500 baht (US$54 to US$68) per service, keeping a 500 baht (US$14) commission for herself. The case was subsequently turned over to the Crime Suppression Division’s fifth unit for legal proceedings.

A 13 year old was found among those being offered sexual services. The operation, spearheaded by high-ranking police officials, led to the arrest of the 39 year old owner, who confessed to knowingly profiting from the illicit trade.
