Police dismantle billion-baht foreign business network in Thailand

The Police Region 8 announced the results of its operation dismantling a foreign business network unlawfully taking jobs from Thais, with damages exceeding 1 billion baht.

Yesterday, February 25, Police Major General Pornchai Khajornklin, Deputy Commander of Police Region 8, revealed the findings of an investigation and raid targeting foreign groups conducting illegal business activities in Thailand.

The operation spanned seven provinces within the jurisdiction of Police Region 8, covering 29 targets.

Police arrested 23 suspects, highlighting a significant case involving the arrest of Chinese nationals in Phuket.

These people allegedly concealed business operations by using nominees, covering various sectors such as restaurants, international schools, hotels, car rental services, condominiums, and luxury villa projects. The total investment was valued at approximately 1 billion baht (US$29.6 million).

In addition, police seized 4,108,000 baht (US$121,580) in cash for further investigation and searched an accounting office implicated in supporting and fabricating documents to disguise foreign-owned businesses.

Moreover, on February 24 at around 11pm, Nakhon Si Thammarat Provincial Police apprehended a group smuggling e-cigarettes. The suspect, named Manit, whose surname has been withheld, was caught with a Hino truck and 50,000 e-cigarettes.

The arrest took place on Asia Highway 41 in Chulabhorn district, Nakhon Si Thammarat province, with the suspect facing legal proceedings, reported KhaoSod.

Police Region 8 has urged the public to be aware of these incidents and assured them of continued efforts to address illegal activities by foreigners and crackdown on e-cigarette-related offences. These actions aim to uphold public order and benefit Thai society.

In similar news, in Pai district, Mae Hong Son, over 1,600 foreigners were apprehended last year, primarily for traffic and immigration offences, with Israeli visitors comprising 13 of the latter group, as reported by the police.

Police Major General Songkrit Ontakrai, the Mae Hong Son police commander, addressed recent social media rumours suggesting that locals faced numerous issues with allegedly unruly Israeli visitors.
