Sorry for the heist: Buriram burglar leaves apology after shop break-ins

Police arrested an apologetic man who broke into several shops in Buriram to steal money and mobile phones, before leaving an apology note for his crimes. The suspect, 31 year old Witawat, confessed he needed the money to support his family.

Yesterday, September 2, Police Colonel Jamras Siriliang from Buriram City Police Station led Witawat to reenact his crimes after victims reported multiple break-ins in Buriram. He pointed out the locations where he had stolen tools from a construction supply shop.

Witawat then identified the pizza shop where he stole cash, an iPhone, two helmets, and other valuables totalling around 27,000 baht (US$790). His girlfriend, who previously worked at the pizza shop, knew where the money was kept. He left a note for her.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t want to do this. I just need money. I won’t take anything else. I will return it someday.”

Witawat admitted he resorted to theft due to financial difficulties. Unemployed and needing money to buy milk for his young child, he planned to sell the stolen tools on Facebook to cover family expenses. He expressed regret for targeting the pizza shop, acknowledging the kindness of the owner and her foreign partner.

Somjing, the 42 year old owner of the pizza shop, said she suspected Witawat immediately after the break-in. Recognising the handwriting on the apology note, she was disappointed.

The stolen money was her daughter’s savings, meant for a special purchase. Somjing emphasised that despite Witawat’s note claiming he only took money, he also stole a phone and helmets, which was inappropriate given their acquaintance, reported KhaoSod.

Pol. Col. Jamras mentioned that they acted swiftly upon receiving the reports, tracking down leads until they located and apprehended Witawat. He highlighted the Neighbourhood Watch program initiated by Buriram Provincial Police, encouraging residents to look out for one another and report any suspicious activity to the authorities for prompt intervention.
