Former boxer accused of killing mother in Trang province

Police yesterday escorted a former Thai boxer from detention for questioning at Mueang District, Trang Province.
He is accused of killing his 46 year old mother, Sudarat, a vegetable and fruit vendor, at their home in Koh Pia subdistrict, Yantakhao district, Trang, on February 28.
The former pugilist, 28 year old Nattaphon Thongtriphan, also known as Khiam, was apprehended in Nakhon Pathom on March 2 and returned to Yantakhao Police Station the following day.
Initially unable to provide a statement, Khiam later confessed during questioning to killing his mother by punching her.
He claimed it was due to a moment of rage, not anger from a dispute. Khiam denied current drug use but declined to discuss past methamphetamine use.

Police remain sceptical of Khiam’s account, suspecting he might be manipulating his statement for legal advantage.
Despite initial silence, he began speaking after consulting with his lawyer but sometimes evaded certain questions. The interrogation lasted approximately two to three hours.
During his return to the cell, police noticed Khiam clutching a paperclip, likely intended for escape. Khiam, caught by surprise, initially denied intentions to flee but admitted plans to escape to Trat province when probed further. He was promptly returned to his cell.
Khiam has a previous criminal record for arson in 2021, for which he received a suspended sentence. A recent drug test returned negative results.
At the crime scene, family members invited monks from Wat Nong Chum Saeng to perform a ceremony for Sudarat’s spirit. They used her favourite shirt, which had been used to clean her blood, in the ritual.
Sudarat’s funeral is held at Wat Nong Chum Saeng, her birthplace, amidst mourning relatives. Her second son, 27 year old Anontchai, tearfully shared that he has been supporting his family through his professional boxing career in Koh Samui.
He expressed sorrow and exhaustion over the tragedy, recalling his efforts to support his family financially and emotionally after overcoming his health challenges, reported KhaoSod.
Khiam faces charges of killing a parent but has denied confessing and refused to participate in a crime reenactment. Police plan to present him to Trang Provincial Court for further detention.
