A 50 year old Tokyo taxi driver has been arrested for striking a flock of doves and killing one in Shinjuku district last month. Authorities, who detained the driver, Atsushi Ozawa, under charges of violating wildlife protection laws and causing public alarm, initiated an investigation following a call from a concerned citizen who reported a taxi suddenly accelerating and hitting sparrows on the road, resulting in the death of one bird.

The Tokyo taxi driver defended himself, admitting his guilt but disputing the allegations.

“It’s a human road. Birds and the like should avoid it.”

Opinions online are split, with some siding with Ozawa, viewing the charges as excessive, while others support the police, pointing out that Japan has laws protecting wildlife, and that intentional bird killing is illegal. Additionally, the fact that Ozawa showed no remorse added fuel to the latter group’s argument, reported NHK.

The police stated that Ozawa intentionally killed this bird and posed a danger to his fellow motorists.

However, the incident has divided Japanese netizens into two camps – those who side with Ozawa, considering the charges as too severe, and those who support the police, arguing that Japan has wildlife protection laws and intentional killing of birds is wrong, especially since Ozawa showed no remorse.
