Bodyslam singer hits the right note for cancer care in Phuket
The lead singer from popular Thai band Bodyslam is set to headline a charity concert in Phuket, aiming to raise 290 million baht for a new cancer-treatment centre at Vachira Phuket Hospital.
This announcement was made during a press conference at the Phuket Merlin Hotel, with Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat and the singer, Artiwara Kongmalai, present.
The concert is scheduled for March 9 at the 4,000-seat Saphan Hin Gymnasium. Ticket sales will start on December 20, available at 7-Eleven outlets and online through Allticket, with prices ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 baht. VIP- tickets will be exclusive to Vachira Phuket Hospital.
The event will promote eco-friendly practices, incorporating zero-waste and low-carbon initiatives backed by the Sustainable Tourism Development Foundation. Despite earlier announcements on October 29 regarding fundraising for the centre, no government funds have been allocated yet.
Vachira Phuket Hospital, the island’s primary government hospital, is managed by the Ministry of Public Health. This new centre would be the first government cancer-treatment facility along the Andaman coast, covering six provinces, including Phuket and Phang Nga.
Governor Sophon outlined the urgency of the project, stating the Ministry of Public Health has approved funding for advanced radiation therapy equipment, contingent upon the building’s completion by June 2026.
“Construction must start promptly to meet this deadline. Without the facility, the budget for equipment installation could be forfeited, leaving patients without critical care options.”
Acknowledging the support of Luang Por Sai Thong Techathammo, a revered monk, Governor Sophon expressed gratitude for his endorsement of the initiative. Over 56 million baht has been raised so far, but an additional 200 million baht is still required. The initial phase demands 150 million baht by February.
The campaign garners support from community leaders and organisations, notably led by prominent Phuket families. Boon Yongsakul, chairperson of the charity concert and owner of Phuket Boat Lagoon, disclosed his family’s donation of the land for the facility, while emphasising the need for more funds.
Pramookpisitt Achariyachai, associated with the Kata Group of hotels, also voiced his support.
“This building will not only save lives but also reduce the burden on patients and their families.”
Dr Wirasak Lothongkam, Director of Vachira Phuket Hospital, stressed the crucial need for the facility.
“Each year, we receive 1,000 new cancer patients, with 500 requiring radiation therapy. Currently, patients must travel to other provinces for this treatment, which poses financial and emotional challenges for many families.”
The proposed six-storey building will house departments for Nuclear Medicine Radiation Treatment, Chemotherapy, and Inpatient care, covering approximately 9,000 square metres on a 5-rai plot of donated land on Pracha Uthit Road, about 4 kilometres from the hospital. Once operational, the centre is expected to significantly improve cancer care in Phuket and neighbouring areas, reported Phuket News.
Phuket residents and global supporters are encouraged to donate, with contributions eligible for double tax deductions. Donations can be made to Krungthai Bank, account name Donation for the Radiology Building, Chira Phuket Hospital, account number 805-3-11019-3.
