High stakes: Phuket cops bust illegal gambling ring with big names

Phuket police apprehended 14 individuals involved in an illegal gambling operation in Ratsada. Among those arrested were the wife of a local politician, the wife of a police officer, and a lawyer.

Police acted on a tip-off, leading them to the property at 64/16 Soi Karn Keha 5. Officers arrived at 6.30pm yesterday, December 10 and surrounded the single-story house.

Upon entering, they found the group engaged in gambling activities, with playing cards and cash conspicuously displayed on a table.

Items seized during the raid included five decks of playing cards, a round table, approximately 15 chairs, and 3,000 baht (US$90) in cash.

The group, consisting of 13 Thai nationals and one Myanmar woman, faced charges for participating in illegal gambling, specifically playing nine-card poker for money, without the necessary authorisation.

The organiser of the operation was additionally charged with arranging gambling activities without permission. Police reported that all suspects confessed to the charges against them.

Investigations revealed the group’s involvement of notable figures, including the wife of a local Ratsada politician, a police officer’s wife, and a lawyer.

These developments highlight the reach of illegal gambling activities in the region, reported The Phuket News.

Police confirmed that all 14 suspects were taken to Phuket City Police Station for further legal processing.

The police are continuing their efforts to crack down on illegal gambling activities in the area, ensuring that those involved face appropriate legal actions.
