Phuket leads Thailand’s push for sustainable tourism

Thailand is going green in a big way, with Phuket at the forefront of a bold push to revolutionise sustainable tourism. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) has launched the Green Hotel Plus Phuket Sandbox project, a key initiative to raise hotel sustainability standards to global levels.
Minister Chalermchai Sri-on, who chaired the event on Thursday, March 13, stressed that while Thailand’s booming tourism industry generated a staggering 1.67 trillion baht last year, the sector also poses serious environmental challenges. With Phuket alone emitting 3.16 million tonnes of greenhouse gases, the government is racing to transform the industry into a low-carbon, climate-friendly sector.
“Tourism is vulnerable to climate change, and travellers are increasingly looking for sustainable options. By adapting, we not only reduce our environmental impact but also increase business value in line with global demand.”
The Green Hotel Plus Phuket Sandbox aims to certify 600 hotels with internationally recognised Green Hotel Plus certification by February 2026. This initiative aligns with Thailand’s ambition to be a global leader in sustainable tourism and prepares Phuket to host the World Sustainable Tourism Conference from March 31 to April 4, 2026.
The certification, accredited by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), will open new business opportunities and attract eco-conscious travellers. Hotels will be required to implement low-carbon operations, reduce waste, and adopt environmentally friendly management practices.
This transformation is being driven by the Department of Climate Change and Environment, in collaboration with the Sustainable Tourism Development Foundation, hotel operators, and educational institutions. The project underscores the government’s commitment to reshaping Thailand’s tourism landscape to meet international sustainability benchmarks, reported Matichon.
As global travellers become more conscious of their carbon footprint, Thailand’s commitment to green tourism could provide a competitive edge. The government hopes this initiative will set a new standard and position Thailand as a top sustainable travel destination in the years to come.
