Throttle tragedy: German biker’s final ride ends in fatal Thai crash
A tragic high-speed collision in Pattaya has claimed the life of a German biker in a heart-stopping crash that left a local driver shaken but miraculously unscathed. As police delve into the incident, questions mount over the biker’s ill-fated manoeuvre into oncoming traffic.
In the early hours of yesterday, February 16, tragedy struck on Huai Yai Road when a 45 year old German motorcyclist, known locally as Mr Prade, was killed in a devastating crash after reportedly veering into the path of an oncoming SUV.
The aftermath was a chaotic scene of tangled wreckage that has left a community reeling and authorities searching for answers.
At 1.36am, the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Rescue Centre received urgent reports of the harrowing accident that occurred just before Soi K 9 in the Huai Yai area. In a race against time, rescue volunteers and officers from Huai Yai Police Station sped to the scene.
Upon arrival, they encountered the chilling sight of a bronze-gold Toyota Fortuner, its front crumpled and battered as it bore the brunt of the collision.
Behind the wheel, 28 year old Wattanawit stood in shock, recounting the horror that had unfolded before him. Miraculously, he emerged without a scratch.
The grim counterpoint to this near-miraculous escape was the shattered chassis of a Yamaha Grand Filano, nearly unrecognisable in its destroyed state, strewn across the road.
Nearby, laying in a pool of blood, was Mr Prade’s lifeless body, an unsettling end to an impromptu midnight ride through Thailand’s winding roads.
Wattanawit, visibly shaken, recounted returning from a nearby motorbike event when he witnessed the seemingly out-of-control motorcyclist barrel into his path.
“There was nothing I could do. I saw him coming at high speed, crossing into my lane. I tried to dodge, but it was no use.”
Eyewitnesses echoed Wattanawit’s account, describing how the motorcycle, at breakneck pace, strayed into the dangerous oncoming lane before violently colliding with the unsparing SUV.
Alarmed by the horrifying scene, they immediately alerted rescue teams, though their hopes for intervening came too late for the ill-fated rider.
Police officers, tasked with piecing together this tragic puzzle, are turning to nearby CCTV footage to glean more about the moments leading up to the catastrophe.
What triggered Mr Prade’s fatal swerve remains unanswered as investigators attempt to trace the chain of events that culminated in this tragic crash.
As the inquiry presses on, the body of Mr Prade has been respectfully transported to Pattaya Patthamakun Hospital.
