Pattaya pensioner cheats death after motorbike skids under lorry

There was a near miss of nightmare proportions in Bang Lamung this week, after a Pattaya pensioner lost control of his motorbike and almost ended up under the wheels of an articulated lorry.

The heart-stopping incident unfolded at around 10am, yesterday, April 9, when Sawang Boriboon Rescue Centre received an emergency call reporting a motorcycle crash on Highway 331, near the PTT petrol station in the Khao Mai Kaew area.

When rescue teams arrived, they found a battered purple-and-white Yamaha Fino lying in the middle of the road, and its rider, 70 year old Wichai, sprawled nearby with a nasty gash above his right eyebrow and scrapes all over his body.

Paramedics treated the wounded motorist at the scene before rushing him to a local hospital for further care. Miraculously, despite the dramatic crash, Wichai’s injuries were classed as minor, Pattaya News reported.

Police officers reviewed CCTV footage from the area and confirmed that Wichai had lost control of his bike, causing it to slide across the tarmac and come perilously close to the back end of an 18-wheel juggernaut.

“He narrowly missed being hit,” a police spokesperson said. “It could have been far worse.”

Emergency services reminded motorists, especially senior riders, to exercise extra caution on busy highways, and to ensure their vehicles are in good condition before hitting the road.

Last week, a Mercedes-Benz was wrote off and a streetlight was broken in half after an early-morning crash in Pattaya. The driver did a runner faster immediately after the crash.

The chaos unfolded at 6.23am, April 4, near the Sukhumvit intersection, en route to Highway 7 in Na Jomtien, Sattahip, Chon Buri. Witnesses say the Mercedes dodged a red traffic light before smashing straight into a lamppost.

By the time Na Jomtien police arrived, the 4.5 million baht Mercedes-Benz S560e was a crumpled mess in the middle of the central reservation.
