Woman shot dead by boyfriend in Yasothon, northeast Thailand

A tragic incident unfolded in Yasothon province yesterday when a 24 year old woman was fatally shot by her boyfriend following an unsuccessful attempt to reconcile.

The woman had previously returned to her home in Samakkhi subdistrict, Loeng Nok Tha district, unable to endure his jealousy-fuelled violence.

Officers from Loeng Nok Tha Police Station responded to the scene yesterday, on April 17, coordinating with forensic teams and medical professionals.

At the location, the woman’s body was discovered with gunshot wounds to the face, hip, and leg. Several .380 calibre bullet casings were collected as evidence.

Family members identified the gunman as 30 year old Phanthawat, who fled the scene after the shooting.

The investigative team later apprehended Phanthawat at his residence in Som Pho subdistrict, Thai Charoen district, Yasothon province. He was found with the firearm used in the incident.

During questioning, Phanthawat confessed his anger stemmed from his girlfriend’s attempts to distance herself, leading to frequent arguments and physical confrontations.

Despite his efforts to reconcile throughout the night, she refused. As she attempted to leave for a nearby relative’s house around 5am, he followed her and fired the gun until it was empty before fleeing.

Neighbours reported that the couple had been living together for over a year, with frequent arguments due to Phanthawat’s jealousy and fear of her finding someone new. His violent behaviour towards her eventually drove her back to her family home. In the early hours, gunshots and a woman’s cries were heard, followed by a series of gunshots, reported KhaoSod.

Police have sent the woman’s body to a hospital for further examination. Phanthawat faces charges of murder and firearm offences as the legal process continues.

In similar news, a 35 year old pregnant woman was fatally shot by her husband at their home in Bangkok’s Thung Khru district on April 12. The husband confessed to the police that a heated argument escalated into the deadly shooting. He now faces charges of intentional murder and firearm offences.
