Woman found dead in Samut Prakan canal after attempted swim

A 58 year old woman from Khlong Dan, Bang Bo district, Samut Prakan province, was found dead in Khlong Dan yesterday, February 16.
The incident occurred opposite the Khlong Dan Health Promotion Hospital. Police Lieutenant Colonel Phonchai Kamkhuntod, an investigative officer at Khlong Dan Police Station, received the report and coordinated with Ramathibodi Chakri Naruebodindra Hospital in Samut Prakan and the Poh Teck Tung Foundation rescue team to investigate.
At the scene, the woman’s body was found floating face down in the canal. Officials used a boat to bring her to shore for examination. It was estimated that she had been dead for approximately 12 hours, with no visible injuries or signs of assault.
Nikom, a member of the Civil Defence Volunteer Unit, recounted that he had encountered the woman the previous night near the pier in front of Wat Mongkhon Khothawat. Appearing intoxicated, she attempted to swim across the canal to reach her lover’s house on the opposite bank.
Nikom intervened, bringing her back to safety and advising her against such actions. However, upon hearing about the discovery of a woman’s body in the canal the next day, he realised it was the same person he had assisted earlier.
It is suspected that she returned to the location, attempted to swim across again but succumbed to exhaustion and drowned.
Aek, the owner of a local grocery shop, shared that the woman was previously known to drink in front of his shop and often rowed a boat that capsized in the canal. He frequently had to help her.
However, she later shifted to drinking near the temple. Upon learning of her drowning, he was shocked, having been familiar with her for some time, reported KhaoSod.
Police have sent the body for a thorough autopsy and are investigating according to legal procedures. The family will be allowed to take the body for religious rites following the official processes.
