Tragic phone distraction causes fatal motorbike collision in Thailand

A tragic incident occurred when a woman driving a Nissan March car was searching for her mobile phone in the passenger seat, causing the vehicle to lose control and collide with a motorbike. The collision resulted in the death of an 18 year old female student, returning from her Test of General Aptitude (TGAT) examination.

The accident took place around 12.40pm Today, near the entrance to Wat Chedi Sao, approximately 50 metres away on Lampang-Jae Hom Road.

At the scene, the lifeless body of Kanyapatchara, an 18 year old student of a renowned high school in Ngao, was found on the footpath. She was carrying a pink backpack.

Another injured party was found close by, a female, who was immediately attended by emergency medical personnel and transported to a nearby hospital in Lampang. The Nissan March car had overturned and was in the middle of the road, showing signs of severe damage. The motorbike, a Yamaha Grand Filano, with a Phayao registration, was discovered nearby.

The 18 year old female motorbike rider relayed that they were returning from a TGAT TPAT examination at Bunwat Witthayalai School. They were on their way to visit a deceased relative whose house was located behind Wat Pra Chedi. As they neared the entrance of the relative’s house, the car, which was following them, hit them from behind, killing her friend and injuring herself.

The 37 year old woman driving the car sustained minor injuries. She recounted that she was returning home via the same route when she received a phone call. The phone was on the passenger seat, and while attempting to reach for it, she lost control of the vehicle.

The car hit the motorbike in front and an electricity pole, causing it to overturn. She managed to get out of the car and sought help. The police are currently holding the woman for detailed investigation and further legal proceedings, reported KhaoSod.
