In a diplomatic move, Thailand Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin declared the intention to elevate ties with Vietnam to a comprehensive strategic partnership (CSP).

During bilateral talks with Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue, the 61 year old Thai PM expressed optimism about the lightning-fast progress in their relations. He highlighted the effectiveness of collaboration across various sectors.

Thailand and Vietnam are gearing up for their fourth joint Cabinet meeting next year, marking the official declaration of their comprehensive strategic partnership. This monumental step underscores the deepening ties between the two nations.

As a symbol of commitment, Vuong Dinh Hue, on a four-day visit to Thailand, signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation between the legislative bodies of the two countries. This formal agreement lays the foundation for a future of strengthened collaboration.

The excitement doesn’t stop there. Hue’s visit includes a trip to Udon Thani, where Hue is set to unveil the world’s first Vietnam Town. The town will host an education and tourism centre, showcasing the life and legacy of former Vietnamese President Ho Chi Minh.

Both leaders reiterated their commitment to boosting bilateral trade volume to a staggering US$25 billion (approximately 891 billion baht) by 2025. Thailand is Vietnam’s largest trading partner in ASEAN, with trade amounting to US$22 billion last year. Moreover, Thailand is the second-largest investor in Vietnam, with a substantial investment of US$14 billion, reported Thai PBS World.

In a thought-provoking speech at Chulalongkorn University, the Vietnamese chairman emphasised the vital role of both nations and ASEAN members in promoting peace and stability. Hue stressed the responsibility to contribute to dialogue, cooperation, and adherence to international law for the sake of future generations.

Hue commended the nation’s contributions to the organisation’s formation and development by acknowledging Thailand’s pivotal role in ASEAN. The National Assembly Chairman highlighted the shared vision of building a strong, united, and resilient ASEAN with a central role in the regional structure.

The strategic partnership aims to foster good relations with external partners, placing emphasis on reliability, responsibility, sincerity, and cooperation for mutual benefit and shared progress.
