Thai man wins nearly 100 million baht in Korean lottery
A man from Udon Thani, Thailand, has won nearly 100 million baht from a South Korean lottery, sharing the prize with a friend. His mother attributes the win to the positive karma from his good deeds towards his parents. After tax deductions and splitting the prize, each will receive around 30 million baht.
The case came to light when reporters visited the home of 64 year old retired teacher, Tassanee, in Ban Dong Wai, Mueang subdistrict, Ban Phue district, Udon Thani province. She is the mother of the lucky winner, 42 year old Sumetsak or Nui, a labourer working in South Korea.
She revealed that she was shocked yet joyful when she learnt about her son’s win, saying that initially, she could hardly believe it.
On January 20, Sumetsak had contacted his mother via a messaging app, revealing that he might soon return home. Concerned, Tassanee inquired about his wellbeing, to which he assured her he was fine, adding that he was handling some paperwork and would return only if required.
Later, during a video call, he disclosed the news of his lottery win, which amounted to nearly 100 million baht (US$2.9 million) before tax and sharing with a friend.
Tassanee mentioned that her son has been legally working in South Korea for nearly five years in an aluminium factory. She described him as a diligent and well-behaved man who never disappointed his parents.
After completing his studies in Thailand, he had the opportunity to learn Korean and subsequently work in South Korea. The family felt overjoyed with his lottery win, but Sumetsak’s decision to return home remains his own.
Reflecting on the reasons behind such fortune, Tassanee believes it stems from her son’s consistent good deeds and respect toward his parents. She emphasised that whether he decides to share any of the prize with her is entirely his choice, as it is his luck and fortune, reported KhaoSod.
She expressed her hope that he uses the money to establish a stable family life, adding that merely seeing her son’s success is enough to make her happy.
