Thai father joins son in jail after carrying ketamine to police station

Police spot suspicious behaviour moments before uncovering hidden narcotics

A Thai father found himself under arrest after visiting his detained son at a police station in Nonthaburi province near Bangkok with ketamine in his possession.

Officers at Rattanathibet Police Station arrested the 35 year old man, identified only as Wuttichai, outside a detention room on the second floor of the station yesterday, October 16, after finding 0.54 grammes of ketamine sealed in a plastic zip-lock bag.

Police told DailyNews that Wuttichai had come to the station to visit his son, who had earlier been arrested for involvement in a physical altercation.

Officers allowed the father to speak with his son through the bars of the detention room, but they soon noticed Wuttichai acting suspiciously. Upon searching him, they found the illegal drug.

Wuttichai confessed that he had visited an entertainment venue on Pradit Manutham Road in Bangkok’s Lat Phrao area, where he had used ketamine. He said he regretted throwing away the leftover drug, so he decided to keep it.

When he later learned that his son had been arrested and detained, he rushed to the station at around 6am to see him, forgetting that he still had the drug on him. He only realised this later, which caused him to behave nervously and attract police attention.

Police said Wuttichai was charged with possession of a Category 2 narcotic for personal use, an offence punishable by up to two years in prison, a fine of up to 40,000 baht, or both. Both father and son were reportedly being held in the same cell pending further legal proceedings.

A similar case was recently reported at Mae Chai Police Station in Chiang Rai province, where a Thai woman pretended to visit her detained boyfriend and brought him a box of food. However, she secretly attempted to hand him methamphetamine tablets, known locally as Yaba, in front of officers.

Her actions did not escape the attention of sharp-eyed police. After her arrest, she reportedly confessed that she had smuggled the drugs because she was worried her boyfriend would suffer from withdrawal symptoms.
