Thai Airways warns of delays as airspace dispute disrupts flights

Rerouted flights and longer delays expected as tensions between India and Pakistan escalate further

Travel chaos looms for passengers heading to South Asia and Europe as Thai Airways International issues a crucial warning about potential delays due to the ongoing airspace closure between Pakistan and India.

Last night, May 7, the Thai flag carrier urged passengers flying to India, Pakistan, and European destinations to double-check their flight details. While flights between Thailand and India remain unaffected, services to Pakistan may face delays.

Additionally, flights to European cities will experience extended travel times, with delays of up to 40 minutes due to changes in flight routes.

“Flights between Thailand and India are operating as normal but services to Pakistan could be impacted,” Thai Airways confirmed.

The airline operates routes to Lahore, Islamabad, and Karachi in Pakistan, all of which are at risk of disruption as tensions between India and Pakistan continue to escalate.

The closure of the Indian-Pakistani airspace, which is expected to last until Saturday, has forced Thai Airways and other airlines to adjust their flight paths. European-bound flights, in particular, will take an additional 30 to 40 minutes as a result of the rerouted routes, which are designed to avoid the volatile airspace.

In light of the situation, Thai Airways is urging passengers travelling to India, Pakistan, or Europe to stay updated on any changes.

“We recommend passengers check for updated flight information on our Facebook page or contact our call centre at 02-356-1111,” the airline advised.

For international travellers, the global contact centre is available at (+1) 647 492 4490.

The airspace closure follows an alarming escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan, triggered by India’s airstrike yesterday, May 7, and Pakistan’s retaliatory action, which saw the downing of an Indian aircraft.

As a result, flights to and from both countries, as well as those passing through the region, are being closely monitored, Bangkok Post reported.

For those planning to travel to South Asia or Europe in the coming days, it’s crucial to stay on top of potential changes to flight schedules. Thai Airways promises to provide passengers with the latest information, so they can adjust their travel plans accordingly.
