Storm’s parking wrecks: Cars crushed, power out near Phra Nang Klao Hospital
A heavy storm caused the roof of a commercial building’s parking area to collapse, damaging several vehicles and cutting off electricity near Phra Nang Klao Hospital. Emergency teams are working to clear debris and restore power.
A severe thunderstorm wreaked havoc yesterday evening, causing significant damage to a commercial building’s parking area in Nonthaburi. At around 7.30pm, the strong winds and heavy rain led to the collapse of the roof, which fell onto parked vehicles and disrupted electricity in the area.
The incident occurred in front of Phra Nang Klao Hospital, situated in Bang Kraso, Mueang district, Nonthaburi. The local disaster prevention and mitigation officials quickly received reports of the roof collapse. The structure fell onto several cars parked by the roadside, causing considerable damage.
The storm’s intensity also led to the collapse of three utility poles, further exacerbating the situation. More than 10 cars and motorcycles were damaged by the falling poles.
Upon receiving the report, Nonthaburi Mayor Samanuek Thanadechakul instructed Deputy Mayor Apiwat Petrueng to inspect the site immediately. They were joined by local police and the Metropolitan Electricity Authority from the Nonthaburi branch.
The scene revealed a two-storey commercial building with 10 units. The roof of the parking area, made of corrugated iron, was blown off by the strong winds. It landed on seven cars and two motorcycles parked along the street.
The local municipal officials had to temporarily close the inbound traffic lane to clear the debris. Meanwhile, electricity officials worked to cut off the power supply to repair the damage and restore electricity.
Apiwat explained that the heavy rain and strong winds caused the improperly extended roof of the commercial building to collapse. Apiwat revealed this led to immediate power outages in the area, forcing Phra Nang Klao Hospital to use backup generators temporarily, reported KhaoSod.
“Fortunately, there were no injuries from this incident. The electricity officials estimate it will take about four to five hours to restore power. We are working diligently to clear the debris and reopen the traffic lanes.”
