Trat woman collapses after 10 months on diet pills

A 22 year old woman collapsed at her workplace in Trat and was rushed to the hospital late last night, December 3, after reportedly taking weight loss pills for over 10 months.

Investigators suspect the pills, which she bought from an online shop, contain sibutramine, a banned substance linked to severe health risks.

At around 10.30pm yesterday, reporters visited Trat Hospital, where the woman remained unconscious in critical condition. Medical staff performed life-saving procedures for over an hour and placed her on a ventilator before transferring her to the internal medicine ward for further monitoring.

The boyfriend, 20 year old Phongsaphak, said his girlfriend complained of dizziness for two days before collapsing during work. He rushed to the hospital upon receiving the call and found her unconscious. He believes the incident may be linked to the weight loss pills, which she took continuously for more than 10 months, despite his repeated warnings.

She reportedly ordered the pills from a shop on a well-known online shopping platform. At the time of the incident, she weighed 80 kilogrammes.

The woman’s 64 year old aunt said a co-worker told her that her niece had felt dizzy at work and that they advised her to rest. However, after the shift ended, colleagues found her unresponsive.

The aunt confirmed her niece had no underlying health conditions but had recently complained of dizziness, fatigue, and appetite loss.

Ch7HD News reported that officials examined the pills and confirmed they matched products that the Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had previously flagged for containing sibutramine. Thailand has banned the substance since 2009.

Health officials have linked the substance to heart disease, stroke, psychological effects, and addiction.

Doctors continue to closely monitor the woman’s condition. Her family urged the public not to use unapproved diet pills and advised users to check product licences at fda.moph.go.th.

In similar news, a foreign woman collapsed on Bangla Road in Phuket, allegedly after consuming a cannabis-infused snack. Her boyfriend allegedly refused assistance from rescue workers.
