Rescue vehicle runs red light and kills woman on Lamphun road

A rescue vehicle ran a red light in the northern province of Lamphun and crashed into two motorcycles, resulting in the death of a Thai woman.

Officers from Mueang Chi Police Station were alerted to the accident at Doi Ti Intersection on the Lampang–Chiang Mai Road at around 8.30pm on Tuesday, May 6. Witnesses reported that a rescue vehicle belonging to the Southern Amarin Rescue Foundation caused the incident.

According to eyewitnesses, the rescue vehicle failed to stop at a red light and collided with motorcycles that entered the intersection after receiving a green light.

Witnesses further stated that the rescue vehicle was not carrying any patients at the time, and they questioned why the driver activated the siren, drove at high speed, and disregarded the traffic signal.

Police confirmed that two motorcyclists were injured, while a 45 year old Thai woman named Kamonrat was pronounced dead at the scene. She had just finished work at the Lamphun Industrial Estate and was riding her motorcycle home.

Kamonrat’s husband, Kamon, told ThaiRath that he had been waiting for his wife as usual at the entrance of the alley leading to their home. When she did not arrive at her usual time, he called her but received no response.

Shortly thereafter, Kamon was informed of his wife’s death by police. He said he had not yet had the heart to break the news to their seven year old daughter, Tonkhao. The girl only learned the truth at her mother’s funeral yesterday, May 7.

The identity of the rescue vehicle’s driver has not been made public. However, the Southern Amarin Rescue Foundation later issued an official apology and clarification via its Facebook page.

According to the foundation, the rescue vehicle was not transporting any critically ill patients but was instead carrying equipment to help control a fire in the grassland near the industrial estate.

The team rushed to the scene to prevent the fire from spreading into the nearby manufacturing zone, which contained chemical substances that could have exacerbated the situation.

The foundation expressed its deepest condolences to Kamonrat’s family and pledged to provide financial support for her daughter until she completes high school.

As of now, police have not disclosed details regarding legal proceedings, potential penalties, or the amount of compensation to be awarded.
