Phuket has been handpicked as the focal point for the Urban Act initiative, an ambitious drive set to spearhead low-carbon, resilient urban growth across the Asia-Pacific. The announcement was unveiled at a meeting in Phuket Provincial Hall with Governor Sophon Suwannarat and Vice Governor Ronnarong Tipsiri among the key players present.
The Urban Act Project, which kicked off in April 2022, is being bankrolled by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action through their International Climate Initiative. With aims to bolster Thailand’s quest for Nationally Determined Contributions and Sustainable Development Goals, this initiative sets its sights on cutting carbon emissions and toughening urban communities against climate change.

The Ministry of Interior, with heavyweight support from agencies like the Department of Public Works and Town & Country Planning and the Meteorological Department of Thailand, is at the helm of this pivotal project, joining forces with GIZ and eminent German universities.

“Our mission to ‘alleviate suffering and promote happiness’ is intertwined with tackling climate change, which is now a major player affecting urban life and public well-being.”
This eco-forward vision isn’t just confined to Thailand either. Through the IMT-GT (Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle), cities like Hat Yai and Nakhon Sri Thammarat are also jumping on the bandwagon, planning climate-savvy urban developments.
