Another pair of giant pandas is set to arrive in Thailand as part of a diplomatic gesture to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Sino-Thai relations next year.

The announcement follows a meeting of key stakeholders, including representatives from the Zoological Park Organisation, Chiang Mai Zoo, the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, the Department of East Asian Affairs, and the Budget Bureau. These organisations convened yesterday, October 29, to discuss the logistics and preparations necessary for welcoming the pandas from China.

Permanent Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment Jatuporn Buruspat confirmed China has agreed to loan the pandas to Thailand. The ministry is poised to receive the animals, although specific arrival dates have yet to be disclosed.

Chiang Mai Zoo has a history of hosting giant pandas, having previously cared for two pandas lent by China. These animals quickly became beloved figures in Thailand after they arrived in 2003, serving as goodwill ambassadors. The male panda, Xuang Xuang, passed away in 2019, followed by his partner, Lin Hui, last year, Jatuporn said.

“This initiative marks a continued commitment to fostering strong diplomatic ties and cultural exchange between Thailand and China.”

Following the death of the pandas, Chiang Mai Zoo returned their remains to China on January 30. A comprehensive report detailing the pandas’ lives in Thailand was also submitted for review by Chinese officials, reported Bangkok Post.

During their stay, Xuang Xuang and Lin Hui had one cub, a female named Lin Ping, who was born in Thailand. Lin Ping was relocated to China in 2013, furthering the cultural and scientific exchange between the two nations.
