Monsoon meltdown: Thailand braces for scattered rain
The monsoon in southwest Thailand has taken a backseat, leading to reduced rainfall across the country. However, some northern areas are still in for a soaking, prompting warnings for residents to stay vigilant against heavy and accumulated rain.
Northern region:
Thunderstorms are expected to cover 30% of the area, with particularly heavy rain forecasted for Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Tak provinces. Temperatures will range from a minimum of 24 to 26 degrees Celcius to a maximum of 33 to 35°C. Winds from the southwest will blow at 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.
Northeastern region:
Expect thunderstorms over 10% of the area, especially in Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, and Chaiyaphum provinces. Temperatures will vary between 24 to 27°C and 34 to 37°C, with southwest winds at 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.
Central region:
Thunderstorms will cover 20% of the area, mostly hitting Uthai Thani, Kanchanaburi, and Ratchaburi provinces. Minimum temperatures will be 24 to 28°C, with highs of 36 to 37°C. Winds from the southwest will range from 10 to 25 kilometres per hour.
Eastern region:
Thunderstorms will affect 30% of the area, particularly in Chanthaburi and Trat provinces. Temperatures are expected to be between 25 to 29°C at their lowest and 33 to 36°C at their highest. Southwest winds will blow at 15 to 30 kilometres per hour, with sea waves about 1 metre high, rising above 1 metre in thunderstorm zones.
Southern region (east coast):
Thunderstorms will cover 20% of the area, especially in Songkhla, Pattani, and Narathiwat provinces. Expect temperatures to range from 24to 27°C to 35 to 37°C. Southwest winds will be at 15 to 30 kilometres per hour, with sea waves about 1 metre high, reaching 1 to 2 metres in thunderstorms.
Southern region (west coast):
Thunderstorms will also cover 20% of the area, mainly affecting Ranong and Phang Nga provinces. Temperatures will vary between 25 to 28°C and 34 to 36°C. Southwest winds will be at 15 to 35 kilometres per hour from Phang Nga and upwards, and 15 to 30 kilometres per hour from Phuket downwards. The sea will have waves between 1 and 2 metres high, exceeding 2 metres in thunderstorms.
Bangkok and vicinity:
Thunderstorms will cover 20% of the area. Temperatures will range from a minimum of 26 to 28°C to a maximum of 35 to 38°C, with southwest winds at 10 to 25 kilometres per hour.
Sailors in the upper Andaman Sea should remain cautious, as waves in thunderstorm areas could exceed 2 metres, reported Pattaya Mail.
