A 25 year old inmate convicted of drug offences was apprehended after escaping from a correctional facility in Nakhon Ratchasima (also known as Korat). The escape, which occurred yesterday, February 6, involved climbing the prison wall and fleeing into a nearby community area.
Prison officials in Nakhon Ratchasima alerted the local police about the escape, noting that the escapee, Kanpoj, had changed from his prison attire into a black T-shirt to avoid detection. He managed to flee through the Wat Buphar intersection, a populated area within the municipal district.
Officials quickly organised a manhunt, blocking potential escape routes and asking residents for assistance in reporting sightings.
The escape caused concern among parents due to the proximity of a large educational institution. Kanpoj, who was arrested in June last year for drug-related offences, is distinguished by his shaved head, a tattoo on his left arm, and leg injuries sustained during the escape.
Reports indicate that Kanpoj was found a few hours later in Nakhon Ratchasima. Jaroon, a 33 year old resident, reported Kanpoj hiding in a parking lot near the prison.
He appeared exhausted and was injured from barbed wire cuts. Kanpoj reportedly pleaded, “Please, I give up, my leg hurts,” to which Jaroon responded, urging him to surrender immediately. The police arrived and arrested Kanpoj without any resistance, reported KhaoSod.
In similar news, the father of a prisoner who escaped from Nonthaburi Provincial Prison, near Bangkok, on February 2 believes his son fled after discovering his wife’s affair.
The fugitive, 32 year old Wasan Obnual, was serving a three-year sentence for theft after being arrested in September 2022. Having spent nine months in prison, he was classified as an “excellent class” inmate, allowing him to work outside under the Department of Corrections.
On the day of his escape, Wasan was assigned to a construction site at the Corrections Museum in Nonthaburi. He was last seen at 12pm before vanishing. Instead of fleeing far, he returned home in Soi Sri Phon Sawan—just a short distance from both the prison and the museum.
