The father of an inmate who escaped from a prison in Nonthaburi province near Bangkok on February 2 suspected his son fled after learning about his wife’s lover.

The escaped inmate, 32 year old Wasan Obnual, was arrested for snatching in September 2022 and sentenced to three years in prison. He had been imprisoned at Nonthaburi Provincial Prison for nine months as a prisoner in the excellent class, which allowed him to leave the prison to work for the Department of Corrections.

On February 2, Wasan was working at a construction site for the Corrections Museum in Nonthaburi province from 8am but later disappeared at around 12pm. He returned to his home in Soi Sri Phon Sawan, which is very close to both the prison and the museum where he worked.

Wasan’s mother told Channel 7 that her son arrived home in a taxi and borrowed money from her to pay the fare. He told her that he was released from prison but was required to wear an electronic monitoring (EM) bracelet. He then borrowed her motorcycle and mobile phone, claiming he needed to go to court for the bracelet.

The mother insisted that she did not know her son had escaped from prison and did not support his actions. She attempted to contact him, but he did not respond to her calls or messages.

Channel 8 shared a letter written by Wasan to Ice on 6 May last year. Wasan wrote..

“How are you, Ice? You did not respond to my last letters. Are we really going to end like this? OK, then. Let it end this way. I would like to tell you the same as I tell my other exes in life—good luck, Ice. I hope your new boyfriend takes good care of you. Be patient when you two face difficulties. That’s the beauty of love.

“For me, I have just realised that I don’t have you when I’m in trouble. I now know that I was a fool for loving the wrong person. I thought all the good things I did for you would make you give me all your heart, but I got nothing. It’s fine. I’m a fool myself.”
