A man wielding a knife caused chaos in Santat village, Mae Chan district, Chiang Rai province, injuring a police officer before being fatally shot. A subsequent search of his home revealed drug paraphernalia.

Local police received a report at 9.30pm yesterday that a man was wreaking havoc in the village. Upon arrival, the officers found 28 year old Toon walking down a public road brandishing a long knife and threatening passersby. Mae Chan district officials attempted to control the situation.

Toon immediately attacked the responding officer, Sutthikiat Phanomphraisakul, with the knife, injuring his right leg. Sutthikiat was forced to fire his weapon in self-defence, resulting in Toon being shot and collapsing. The officer was then rushed to Mae Chan Hospital for treatment.

Investigators later confirmed that Toon had died from his injuries. Police found a long knife and a short knife in his possession. A thorough search of Toon’s residence uncovered equipment used for consuming methamphetamine. However, there were no previous records of arrest or drug use.
