Explicit dance video from Lopburi tattoo contest triggers body-shaming debate

Police warn of fines and jail time for sharing video labelled as 'wood ear mushroom'

A viral video of an explicit dance at a tattoo contest in Lopburi province sparked a debate online after many left disrespectful comments about her body, mocking her genitalia for resembling a wood ear mushroom.

A Thai woman yesterday, November 11, publicly apologised after the explicit video from the contest was widely shared online. The footage showed her dancing provocatively in a revealing outfit that exposed her genitals to the audience and judges.

The contestant explained that she had attempted to cover her private parts with a sticker, but it had fallen off before the performance began. She admitted to consuming a large amount of alcohol prior to going on stage, which led her to act recklessly and fail to notice the exposure.

Netizens criticised the contestant for her inappropriate behaviour, noting that it was not worth damaging her reputation.

However, many others left cruel and disrespectful comments about her appearance and genitals. Some mocked her for her genitalia, noting that it resembled the wood ear mushroom.

Another group of social media users acknowledged that her actions were inappropriate but defended her against the body-shaming. They pointed out that sexual organs vary naturally between individuals and should not be a reason for ridicule or bullying. Some comments read…

“Those making negative comments about her genitals should take a look at their own. Are yours perfect?”

“Have you ever done any research before posting? Genital appearance varies greatly and has nothing to do with frequency of use, as some nonsense people are saying.”

“I understand her actions were wrong, but people should stop the hate speech.”

Later, the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) issued a statement urging people not to share the explicit clip. The agency warned that distributing such footage could result in up to five years in prison. Their statement read…

“Be careful! Sharing the ‘wood ear mushroom’ video can result in imprisonment of up to five years.”

Police clarified that distributing explicit videos, including the recent tattoo contest clip, violates the Computer Crimes Act and carries a penalty of up to five years in prison, a fine of up to 100,000 baht, or both.

They added that the woman involved could face a fine of up to 5,000 baht for public indecency under the Criminal Code. At the time of reporting, no announcements have been made regarding the contestant’s fines.
