Chon Buri police arrest blacksmith for illegal gun manufacturing
Police in Chon Buri arrested a local blacksmith moonlighting as an illegal gun manufacturer, seizing homemade guns and various illegal gun parts from his residence.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Somchanok Fakphairot and Police Lieutenant Colonel Apichat Boonkerd of the Nong Prue Police Station led the operation yesterday, September 15, apprehending 38 year old Boonmee in Nong Prue, Bang Lamung district. The arrest followed a tip-off from an informant, who reported that Boonmee was producing and selling illegal firearms to local youths.
Police planned a sting operation, arranging for an undercover agent to purchase a homemade pistol, specifically a small-sized Derringer model, for 2,000 baht.
During the arranged transaction at the agreed location, Boonmee arrived to hand over the gun and collect the payment. At this point, officers revealed themselves and arrested him, confiscating the 11mm pistol and two rounds of ammunition.
Following the arrest, police searched Boonmee’s residence. Inside, they discovered a stash of gun parts, ammunition, and a homemade silencer used for testing the weapons. These items were seized as evidence.
During questioning, Boonmee admitted that he had manufactured the firearm himself. He explained that he had learned the craft from the Internet and had started making illegal homemade guns during his free time after losing his job.
Previously a blacksmith specialising in wrought iron doors and windows, Boonmee had some experience with tools and equipment, which facilitated his transition to gun-making.
Boonmee revealed that he usually makes a profit of around 500 to 1,000 baht per gun. He stated that he only sells the weapons to acquaintances who place orders as he considers this as only a side job for extra income.
Despite his attempts to downplay the seriousness of his activities, Boonmee now faces legal consequences. He has been handed over to the investigating officers, along with the seized items, to face charges and legal proceedings, reported KhaoSod.
