Cebu Pacific unveils first direct flights from Manila to Chiang Mai
Cebu Pacific introduces its inaugural direct flights from Manila to Chiang Mai, starting October 29. This new route marks the airline’s fourth destination in Thailand, adding to its existing services from Manila and Mactan-Cebu International Airport to Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang Airports.
Cebu Pacific’s President and Chief Commercial Officer Xander Lao highlighted the significance of this new route.
“Chiang Mai’s natural heritage, ancient temples, and laid-back atmosphere promise a tranquil escape.”
This direct connection will enable travellers to explore the serene beauty of northern Thailand beyond the bustling urban scenes.
In celebration, the low-cost carrier is offering an irresistible promotion: a ticket sale to Chiang Mai for just 1 Philippine peso (0.61 baht). The airline aims to strengthen its presence in the region.
“Q4 is looking strong for Cebu Pacific, with additional and new destinations to be announced over the coming months.”
Cebu Pacific signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Airbus on July 2 for the purchase of up to 152 planes worth 1.4 trillion Philippine pesos (around 851 billion baht) – the largest aircraft order in Philippine aviation history. This expansion aligns with the airline’s strategy to tap into rising demand for secondary and tertiary city travel.
The decision to launch flights to Chiang Mai was driven by industry data, including search engine interest and passenger statistics. The airline’s success with direct flights to Da Nang, Vietnam, launched on December 7 last year, exemplifies the growing interest in lesser-known destinations.
Shifting focus due to reduced demand in China, Cebu Pacific has suspended flights to Beijing and ceased seasonal winter services to Xiamen and Shenzhen. The strained relations between the Philippines and China, amid maritime disputes, have prompted a strategic pivot. Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr authorised the purchase of multirole fighter jets, reflecting the escalating tensions.
As Cebu Pacific redirects its assets, it continues to explore emerging travel trends, establishing new hubs in tertiary cities like Iloilo. Direct flights from Iloilo to Hong Kong will restart in October, demonstrating the airline’s commitment to catering to evolving traveller preferences, reported AeroTime.
