A corruption scandal has surfaced in the Bang Phli district of Samut Prakan province, where the 61 year old chairman of Bang Pla Tambon Administrative Organisation (TAO), and his 44 year old secretary, were apprehended today. The duo was accused of demanding a 2.3 million-baht bribe from a local business.

The arrest followed a complaint lodged by a business firm in Bang Pla. The firm claimed that high-ranking officials from the Bang Pla TAO had asked for 2.6 million baht (US$73,332) to grant a land excavation and landfill permit, a fee that usually costs a mere 500 baht.

The business firm was able to negotiate the bribe down to 2.3 million baht. They subsequently captured a video recording of TAO officials demanding the bribe and presented it to the Anti-Corruption Division (ACD) police, reported Bangkok Post.

Upon receipt of the complaint and the accompanying video recording, the ACD conducted an investigation, gathering substantial evidence against the accused. Warrants were subsequently issued by the Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases, Region 1.
