Ang Thong locals seek lottery luck from ancient Buddha statue
Lottery fever sweeps town as lucky bamboo sticks reveal magical winning numbers

Forget scratch cards and lucky coins—Ang Thong residents have discovered a far more sacred way to seek fortune.
The town is gripped by lottery fever as hundreds flock to Wat Thong Luean to seek blessings from Luang Por Daeng, an ancient Buddha statue believed to be over 700 years old and famed for granting miraculous good luck.
The revered sandstone statue, which locals call Luang Por Daeng, is a 701 year old treasure sitting majestically at Wat Thong Luean temple in the province’s Sawaeng Ha district. Notorious among devotees for its incredible powers, the statue is widely credited with changing fortunes overnight.
Crowds gathered enthusiastically yesterday, July 31, participating in the traditional Thai ritual of shaking bamboo sticks, hoping to receive divine lucky numbers just in time for the lottery draw scheduled for today, August 1. Excited whispers quickly spread as the number 76 emerged as the top pick, prompting many residents to rush out and secure their lucky tickets.
One local devotee proudly showed off her ticket bearing the lucky digits.
“I always come here before the lottery day. Luang Por Daeng has never let me down yet. If I win again, I’ll come back with even bigger offerings.”
Indeed, gratitude toward the sacred Buddha runs deep in Ang Thong. Locals who have previously struck lottery gold regularly return to the temple laden with gifts including traditional long drums, colourful flower garlands, and even cans of energy drinks—offerings chosen to show thanks for the energy and fortune the statue is believed to bestow.
For many in this tight-knit community, Luang Por Daeng is much more than just a lottery charm. The statue holds deep spiritual significance, providing comfort and hope to people facing life’s uncertainties. Even visitors from outside Ang Thong have begun making pilgrimages, drawn by tales of miraculous windfalls, KhaoSod reported.
“It’s amazing to see the power of belief here,” said a visitor from nearby Sing Buri province. “Everyone is genuinely convinced Luang Por Daeng can make their dreams come true.”
