Flooding in Chiang Mai leaves 90 year old stranded
A 90 year old grandmother yesterday was left stranded and in need of rescue in Chiang Mai after floodwaters surrounded her home. Her worried family coordinated with emergency services, who safely evacuated her, navigating dangerous conditions.
Flooding continued in several areas of Mueang district, Chiang Mai, due to the overflow from the Ping River. Despite the challenging conditions, rescue teams persevered, wading through nearly 2-metre-high floodwaters to assist residents.
The Sattahip Disaster Response Team played a crucial role in these efforts, using flat-bottomed boats to distribute food from the Nong Hoi Subdistrict Municipality’s communal kitchen, assist the sick, and evacuate people and belongings from high-risk areas.
The team reported that some areas had started to see a reduction in water levels, but others remained heavily inundated. They continued to deliver food and water to those who chose to remain in their homes despite the flooding.
The Sattahip Disaster Response Team received a distress call from residents in Sattahip, expressing concern for a 90 year old grandmother named Nuansiri. She had been unreachable for several days, and no assistance had yet reached her. Fearing for her safety, the team, already engaged in relief efforts in Chiang Mai, promptly headed to her location.
Upon arrival, the team found Nuansiri sitting alone in her two-storey house. They had to wade through the floodwaters to reach her. Concerned for her safety, the rescue personnel tried to persuade her to leave for a shelter, reported KhaoSod.
The situation required a video call with her relatives to help convince her to evacuate. After some negotiation, she agreed to leave her home. The rescue team then carried her out of the house due to the high water levels and transported her to the Nong Pa Khrang Subdistrict Municipality in Mueang district for initial care while awaiting her family’s arrival.
