Two men arrested for cable theft in Bangkok’s Si Phraya area
Two men were arrested yesterday for allegedly stealing communication cables in the Si Phraya area in Bangkok. The suspects were apprehended by police after suspicious behaviour was observed, including inconsistent explanations for their presence at the scene.
The arrest was conducted by a team led by Police Lieutenant General Siam Boonsom and several other senior officers, including Police Major General Samart Promchat. The suspects were caught near the Si Phraya-Charoen Krung intersection in Bang Rak district, Bangkok.
Confiscated items included one orange wire cutter, two blue wire cutters, various hooks and crowbars, a torch, and a blue Toyota Corolla with the registration number 3ณ9493.
The operation was initiated after the Bang Rak Police Station received multiple reports from National Telecom Public Company Limited regarding frequent cable thefts in the area. The thefts typically involved opening manhole covers, cutting the cables, and returning later to retrieve them. Consequently, increased patrols were conducted to prevent further incidents.
While patrolling, officers noticed a suspicious blue vehicle parked in the area. Upon approaching, they observed Thaworn and Adisak behaving nervously, avoiding eye contact, and attempting to evade police inquiries.
Initially, the suspects claimed they were changing a flat tyre but their mannerisms contradicted this explanation. Further questioning led to another inconsistent statement from Adisak, who said he was urinating in the area, raising further suspicion.
Officers then noticed an ajar manhole cover, which led to a search of the suspects and their vehicle. Thaworn was found without any illegal items, but Adisak had an orange wire cutter tucked into his trousers. A more thorough search of their vehicle revealed tools and equipment typically used in cable thefts, reported KhaoSod.
Faced with the evidence, the suspects were charged with attempted joint theft at night using a vehicle. The suspects and seized items were subsequently handed over to investigators for legal proceedings.
